Here’s why you need to follow the Instagram account ‘Masarap Ba?’

Gil Cadiz

If you either laugh or roll your eyes at flowery and ostentatious food reviews, you will want to follow Masarap Ba?, an anonymous Instagram account that has amassed 177,000 followers by posting hilarious, honest-to-goodness and no-BS reviews of different varieties of food.

The description of the IG account says, “Simple lang yan: masarap o hindi. It’s been consistent with staying true to its premise that, at the end of the day, food is simply either good or bad.

The woman running the account has been steadfast in concealing her identity, and so she’s not your typical food blogger or social media influencer that accepts cash in exchange of posting positive reviews of brands. She uses her own money to pay for the food that she reviews and hopes that, by doing what she does, she gets to help talented local food entrepreneurs get introduced to more foodies and ordinary consumers.

We managed to interview the woman behind the account. Here’s our conversation.

How did you become a foodie?
Paggising ko, lagi na ako gutom and with a more imaginative/hyper brain.

#masarapba #masarap . . . . . . . . * RCBC credit card user kse ako, so pumayag ako na itry itong RCBC Mastercard Debit pambayad for foodtrips (dineposit ko yung pera ko dito instead), so hindi ko na kelangang magdala ng cash, mamroblema sa barya, iwas snatch/holdup or mahassle pa pumila sa atm. Widely accepted sya, basta tumatanggap ng card transactions. So far, wala pa naman akong naging bad experience (I'll let you know if ever), and true nga, hassle free gamitin at debit kaya good as cash. Kalurky. OA sa lambot at full na full yung flavor. Wala pa kong natikmang pumantay sa sarap at lambot nito. Tinodo, ginalingan. Pang standing ovation levels. Bravo! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 #masarapba #masarap . . . . . . . . . * RCBC credit card user kse ako, so pumayag ako na itry itong RCBC Mastercard Debit pambayad for foodtrips (dineposit ko yung pera ko dito instead), so hindi ko na kelangang magdala ng cash, mamroblema sa barya, iwas snatch/holdup or mahassle pa pumila sa atm. What are your favorite food joints/restaurants?
Too many to mention and depende sa mood. Pero ang mga lagi ko napapanaginipan, Café Enye, Big Daddy Jay’s All-American BBQ, KEBUR, New City Food House sa Kalayaan, QC, Amare la Cucina, Bun Appétit, Carbonara ng St Marc Café, and Bicol Express ni Aling Doris.

When you created the Masarap Ba? account on Instagram, did you foresee it to get as big as it is now?
No. Nevah.

What’s the best thing about running this IG account?
I can creatively and freely express myself. We (me and my friends in the team) pay for every meal kasi kaya walang bias (magastos pero ok lang). I love that we’re able to honestly critique the food we eat.

What’s the worst thing about it?
As in hundreds yata sila daily pero ok lang kse enjoy. Ako kase talaga mismo sumasagot lahat.

Nyeta, Hands down. So far isa sa pinakawinner na lengua sa mundong ibabaw for me.

What’s the worst insult you got from your bashers?
I have high EQ. I don’t take things personally. I know I can’t please everyone and I know lagi talagang may kokontra. Honestly, I respect and welcome those who oppose me, ‘cause they have interesting insights as well. I learn from them, too. Dyan tayo tumatalino eh 😉. Ang problema daw sa mga Pinoy like me, puro reklamo… Saken naman, ang problema sa mga Pinoy, we refuse to accept criticism. Too emotional. Kaya hindi maka-move on. Most of us refuse to accept that we need to improve.

What’s one goal you hope to achieve with your very popular IG account?

Will you ever reveal your identity?
No.

Even the dynamite performer Bruno Mars did not escape the Masarap Ba? review.

🙄 "24k biglang namagic in the air." More! More!" 🤣🤣🤣 #BruhaKaMars #24kmagicworldtour Pro tip: try nyo yung binebentang rum cocktail dun. Yung 24k Magic ang name. 200 pesos sya. Masarap!
